Prof. Piotr Fudalej’s professional career path

Prof. Piotr Fudalej’s life and professional motto is the saying – “I hate not knowing,” and that’s why he has chosen with such dedication to take the not easy path of scientist, researcher and clinician. Combining research work with the daily work of a clinician is difficult. All the more so because the professor’s activities are linked to his presence in several countries. It is thanks to his dogged pursuit of knowledge that he wins first place in the 1986 Biological Olympiad. In addition to the prestige, he was the only one among several hundred to receive an index to the Medical Academy in Warsaw without entrance exams. He graduated from these studies (1986-1991) as one of the best students of the year. Since he “hates not knowing,” he continued his education at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw (1990-1992). He wanted to become an orthodontist at all costs, but in Poland getting a specialization in orthodontics proved to be an impossible task. Therefore, he finishes his specialization studies in orthodontics (1996-1998) at the University of Washington in the USA.

Specialization in orthodontics

Completing his specialization in Seattle was undoubtedly a milestone in his career as a professor. At the time, for a resident of a changing Central and Eastern Europe, getting to specialize with an orthodontic guru like the irreverent Vincent Kokich was a great honor and an opportunity for professional growth. This was the beginning of a strenuous, but rather fast-paced academic career, the various stops of which were located in the most prestigious scientific centers in the field of orthodontics. Already in 1999, Prof. Piotr Fudalej defended with distinction his doctoral thesis, in which he undertook an analysis of the stability of the effects of orthodontic treatment in the context of the cause of tooth distortion many years after treatment.

From 2004 to 2010, at the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw, Dr. Piotr Fudalej, M.D., took care of children with complex facial congenital malformations. From Warsaw, he moved to Nijmegen, the Netherlands, where he worked at Radbound University Nijmegen Medical Centre from 2010-2012, conducting research as well as lecturing and teaching.

Warsaw, Olomouc, Bern … and Krakow

Conducting a lot of scientific research during this time, he defended his second doctoral thesis in 2011 and his habilitation thesis a year later in the Czech Republic, where he is a lecturer. During this period, he began working at the University of Bern where he took the position of Director-Coordinator of Clinical Research. In 2016, he received a professorial appointment from the President of the Czech Republic. He is currently the only non-retired professor of orthodontics in the Czech Republic. In March 2019, he also became a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.

Prof. Piotr Fudalej is the author or co-author of more than dozens of scientific publications, and he has presented the results of his research in more than a dozen cities on 4 continents (Europe, Asia, North and South America). He is currently conducting scientific projects in Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Poland, and together with Dr. Ewa Wegrodzka is analyzing methods of evaluating facial aesthetics. Topics of research undertaken by Prof. Piotr Fudalej:

Gingival recessions and orthodontic treatment.
Stability of orthodontic treatment.
Three- and four-dimensional (3D and 4D) visualization of the face – application in the evaluation of treatment results.
Scar tissue in the palatal region as a major factor in the disruption of jaw growth in children with cleft defects.

As a clinician at the current time, he devotes the most attention to the implementation of state-of-the-art technological solutions into the management protocols of orthodontic therapies. According to Professor Fudalej, “digital orthodontics is a challenge, it is a facilitation, it is a necessity, and it is a commitment to patients to make the treatment process optimal and friendly, and the therapeutic results predictable and long-term!”
